Three Sharks make CPL All-Star roster

WILMINGTON,NC (news release) -- The Wilmington Sharks of the Coastal Plain League are proud to announce that three players – Daniel Aldrich, Justyn Carter and Jake Mayers – have been selected as 2011 CPL All-Stars and will travel to Fayetteville to play in the CPL’s 13th annual All-Star Game on Monday, July 18.

Mayers received the additional honor of being named the American All-Star Team’s starting third baseman for the game.

With the Sharks this summer, Mayers leads the team in hitting with his .313 batting average, as he has tallied five doubles, one triple and one home run on the year while driving in 21 RBIs. Mayers plays both third base and pitches with Wilmington, amassing a 2-1 record with 23 strikeouts in six appearances on the hill so far this summer.

Aldrich leads the Sharks with 28 RBIs, while his seven doubles, two triples and three home runs are all tied for the second-most on the team. Aldrich has played in 33 games so far this summer in both the outfield and as the designated hitter.

Carter, the Sharks starting shortstop, sports a .288 batting average while tallying five doubles and a triple with nine RBIs. Carter has also reached base 19 times via walk and 12 via being hit by pitch. His 17 stolen bases also lead the Sharks in that category.

The American Team features players from 12 CPL clubs with the players being selected by head coaches and media representatives from all clubs. The American roster is comprised of 27 players.

The Fayetteville SwampDogs, in conjunction with the Coastal Plain League, will host the All-Star Game and festivities beginning on Sunday, July 17 and running through Monday, July 18. Game time is set for 7:05 p.m. on July 18. On Sunday, players will participate in the CPL All-Star Fan Fest before the 2011 CPL Home Run Derby Sunday night. Monday, the CPL All-Stars will do a variety of events, including making a visit to Fort Bragg Army base in Fayetteville, before the All-Star game on Monday night.

The Wilmington Sharks are members of Coastal Plain League, the nation’s hottest summer collegiate baseball league. Celebrating its 15th season, The Coastal Plain League features 15 teams playing in North Carolina, South Carolina and Virginia. The CPL gives college players the chance to refine their skills with the use of wooden bats. Players are housed with local host families for the summer. The CPL has had over 700 alumni drafted and 35 alums make their Major League debut thus far.
