Pro surfers gather at Wrightsville Beach for 7th Annual Reef Sweetwater Pro-Am Surf Fest

Wrightsville Beach, NC (WWAY)-- Thousands of local surfers and beach goers came out to enjoy this competition between some of the worlds best surfers.

That crowd saw one of the largest surfing contests on the east coast as there were 350 entries in this years surf fest, including 96 professionals.

Many of the surfers are from all over the world.

"Pros come from all over the world, from Australia, we got some from Hawaii, Puerto Rico, and Barbados," said Reef Sweetwater Pro-Am Surf Fest Co-Founder Brad Beach. "Even on the amateur side I know there is a couple kids from Barbados and even further."

One of the favorites was Rob Machado from California. He took home $5,000 as he finished first in the Men's Professional Division.

Local surfer Tony Silvagni won the Men's Open Long Board competition.

"The community really thrives off this event and it brings more revenue to the area," said Silvagni. "Overall just seeing Wrightsville Beach with a huge crowd like this, you know it's a good moment."
