Congressional map for NC approved by Senate panel

Associated Press

RALEIGH, NC (AP) -- Congressional district boundaries that would help Republican candidates win more seats in the next decade have been approved by a state legislative committee.

The Senate's redistricting panel approved a GOP-penned plan Friday after rejecting a mountain lawmaker's changes that would have kept all of Buncombe County in the 11th Congressional District.

Sen. Martin Nesbitt of Asheville said the area's constituents believe they've been politically neutered by a Republican map that puts about 130,000 Buncombe residents in the GOP-leaning 10th District.

Republican senators argue they gave Asheville two congressional districts in keeping with other big cities that already have multiple representations in Congress.

The full Senate is expected to vote on the full plan as early as Monday.
