ONLY ON 3: Rivenbark's son out of ICU, not expected to walk again

READ MORE: ONLY ON 3: Rivenbark's son out of ICU, not expected to walk again

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) -- The son of a Wilmington City Councilman may never walk again. Travis Rivenbark was seriously injured in a bike accident earlier this month. Today his father, City Councilman Charlie Rivenbark spoke exclusively to WWAY.

Charlie Rivenbark says after nearly two weeks in critical condition, his son Travis has been upgraded to fair condition and has been moved from the ICU.

The city councilman says it's been a long road for his son since Travis was hit by a car while riding his bike to Wrightsville Beach two weeks ago.

Charlie says Travis will not be able to walk again, but can again talk, eat foods other than just liquids, and is starting to work on regaining strength.

He says he believes Travis will start physical therapy next week to relearn how to live his life.

"My son is ready to go," Charlie said. "He has a great attitude about it and is anxious to get on with the rest of his life."

Charlie says his family would not have survived this tough time without the support they have received from the community. He says he can never thank the staff of New Hanover Regional Medical Center enough for all they have done and continue to do to give Travis his life back.
