Durham appeals ruling on lacrosse-player lawsuits

READ MORE:

DURHAM, NC (AP) -- Attorneys for the city of Durham have asked a federal appeals court to overturn a lower-court ruling allowing former Duke lacrosse players to seek damages from the city.

The Herald-Sun of Durham reported Wednesday the appeal defends the honesty of Durham's police and highlights inconsistencies in former lacrosse team members' claims.

The filing says U.S. District Judge James Beaty was wrong not to follow a recent U.S. Supreme Court ruling requiring judges to toss out claims against government officials that are based on speculation.

The players were implicated during a 2006 investigation of allegations by a woman hired as a stripper at a team party.

Attorney General Roy Cooper later declared the players innocent and the lead prosecutor in the case was disbarred.
