No NC schools adding classroom days

Associated Press

RALEIGH, NC (AP) -- All North Carolina public schools will be allowed to avoid adding five classroom days to the coming academic year and instead add time to improve teacher training.

The state Department of Public Instruction said Friday that all 115 of the state's local school districts sought and received a waiver from a new requirement to expand the 180-day school year to 185.

The Legislature gave state school officials the power to make exceptions to the requirement for the longer year if the extra days are used to prepare and train teachers as required by the Race to the Top federal grant.

Burke County Schools Superintendent Art Stellar says his district needed the waiver because its academic year calendar was already set by the time the budget was approved in mid-June.
