WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) -- A group from the Sierra Club and non-profit renewable energy company Oceana made a presentation to the New Hanover County Commission Monday night to recommend offshore wind energy. The group is very sensitive to the coast and feels strongly that offshore wind is a better choice than oil, and that it will bring economic and environmental benefits to North Carolina and the US. With oil prices staying high alternative energy ideas are popular. Carina Barnett-Loro says wind power is a good fit for North Carolina. "We have an outer continental shelf that creates shallow water for about 35 miles out, and right now offshore wind technology is much better in shallow water than in deep water," Barnett-Loro said. "So North Carolina not only has a long coastline, but shallow water, which is the best place to develop off shore wind resources." Mac Montgomery, former mayor of Kure Beach and a Sierra Club member, says the question is not if but when we switch to wind energy along our coast. The group will make presentations to other city and county governments. The New Hanover County Commission is not considering a resolution, but invited the group back to a future meeting.
