Charlotte is test market for tobacco lozenges

READ MORE:

CHARLOTTE, NC (AP) - Charlotte smokers are in one of two test markets for a new tobacco product that may please etiquette mavens: dissolvable, smokeless tobacco lozenges.

The Charlotte Observer reported that the lozenges in the shape of orbs, sticks or strips are the latest product from Reynolds American Inc., based in Winston-Salem.

The products all contain less nicotine than cigarettes, between 0.5 and 3 milligrams instead of 12 to 15 milligrams. Reynolds spokesman David Howard says they also meet societal expectations because they don't produce secondhand smoke or cigarette butt litter and no spitting is involved.

Health experts say smokeless options aren't safe. While lung cancer isn't an issue, doctors say risks include mouth cancer, gum disease and tooth loss.
