My son had the same problem. He was laid off last year because of the economy and has been applying almost daily for jobs ever since. He FINALLY had an interview this week and was hired. It's only a part time job, but it may lead to full time with benefits.
I think part of the problem is that most companies now want everyone to apply online, instead of people being able to walk in and meet someone face-to-face to ask for an application. My son is great at meeting people, but when you have to apply online, you're just one of hundreds looking for work. You don't stand out, so you don't even get an interview. If my son can ever get an interview, he usually gets the job.
