Police remove 69 animals from Raleigh house

RALEIGH, NC (AP) -- Animal control officers have removed 69 animals from a house in Raleigh.

Officers were called to a home late Thursday morning and took 66 dogs and three cats from the home. Officers had gotten a report that the animals were being mistreated.

Police spokesman Jim Sughrue says the animals were taken to the Wake County Animal Center for evaluation.

Joanne Duda with the shelter says the dogs had been crowded into cages, sometimes two or three at a time. Duda says some of the animals had tumors and open sores. Some have been euthanized.

No charges have been filed as the investigation continues.

A woman who answered the door of the home would not talk about the situation.
