I-40 stop leads to big drug bust


WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) -- A speeding stop on I-40 led to a big drug bust for New Hanover County Sheriff's deputies.

Investigators say early Friday morning a deputy pulled over a car speeding on I-40 at Hwy. 132. During the stop, the deputy became suspicious of the two men in the vehicle and asked the driver for consent to search his vehicle. The driver gave agreed, and during the search the officers found a large quantity of what they believed to be marijuana and heroin.

In all detectives say they found about 700 bags of Heroin valued at approximately $21,000 and about one pound of marijuana valued at more than $1,000.

Deputies arrested Al Kareem Mayweather (above, left) of Philadelphia and Jamal Lee Curry (above, right) of Lawrenceville, NJ, on a host of drug charges. The men are in the New Hanover County Jail each under $500,000 bond.

"The Philidelphia and New Jersey areas have become two major sources of narcotics coming into the New Hanover County area," Capt. D.A. Ciamillo said. "We are working diligently with local law enforcement there to identify the source of this supply."

The two men were arrested and remain in the New Hanover County Detention Facility under bond. They were charged as follows:
