NC Legal Aid closes 3 offices as funding falls

READ MORE:

RALEIGH, NC (AP) -- Government funding cuts are forcing the
group that provides legal help for the poor to close three offices
that help North Carolina's rural communities.

The News & Observer of Raleigh reported Tuesday
that Legal Aid of North Carolina is cutting
30 positions and closing offices in Smithfield, Boone and Henderson
by the end of September.

The group is coping with budget reductions of more than $2
million as state and federal governments which provide the bulk of
its funding cut back.

Low-income families have increasingly turned for help to Legal
Aid as they fight financial trouble brought on by the economic
downturn. The organization has been heavily involved in helping
people facing foreclosure.

Legal Aid has about 150 attorneys, down from about 250 two years
ago.
