Couple indicted in NC dismemberment death

KINSTON, NC (AP) -- A grand jury has indicted a man and wife on a charge of first-degree murder in the death of a Kinston woman whose dismembered body was found last month in Texas.

The Kinston Free Press reported that a Wake County grand jury returned the indictment Monday against 32-year-old Grant Ruffin Hayes III and his wife, 39-year-old Amanda Hayes. They're charged in the death of 27-year-old Laura Ackerson, who had two children with Grant Hayes

The Hayeses remain in the Wake County Jail without bond. James Freeman of the Wake County Public Defender's Office has been appointed to represent Grant Hayes, and attorney Hart Miles has been appointed to represent Amanda Hayes.

Parts of Ackerson's body were found in July in a creek in Fort Bend County, Texas.
