Perdue keeps NC crime head to lead combined agency

RALEIGH, NC (AP) -- The head of North Carolina's public safety agency is getting more responsibilities for the same salary.

Gov. Bev Perdue announced Thursday that Reuben Young will be secretary of the newly restructured Department of Public Safety. He's been the head of the Department of Crime Control and Public Safety since Perdue took office in 2009.

The new agency is a consolidation of the previously separate departments of crime control, correction, and juvenile justice. Perdue proposed the plan in December.

The move brings state troopers, probation officers and juvenile justice counselors under one roof. Legislative budget-writers say the consolidation will eliminate 34 executive-level positions.

Young provided legal advice to former Gov. Mike Easley throughout his eight years as chief executive. He also worked under Easley when he was attorney general.
