New Hanover Commissioners raise rates, increase paid hours at parking deck

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) -- It’s going to cost you more to park in a certain area of downtown Wilmington.

Today, New Hanover County Commissioners approved increasing the paid parking hours at the county owned parking deck on Second Street to 2 a.m. Thursday through Saturday. Currently parking is free after 7 p.m.

Commissioners also approved increasing the all-day event parking rate from five to seven dollars. Leaders say the change will boost revenue by bringing in an approximate $112,000 a year. Of that money, $42,000 would be used to upgrade the county's parking financial software, $70,000 would go to the general fund and the rest would pay for the manpower need to cover the extra hours.

Frequent downtown shopper, Denise Ward, said, "Well it's discouraging in this economy. We want people to spend money and if we're gonna charge them just to park to come shop, it just doesn't seem right, doesn't seem fair. I think there would be a better solution somewhere down the road other than raising the parking rates."

For now, the Commissioners' decision will only affect the county lot connected to the library on Second Street.
