Man's yard to be tested for pollution

READ MORE: Man's yard to be tested for pollution
BRUNSWICK COUNTY -- Neighbors of a Winnabow man will soon know if the debris in his yard is polluting their water. Brunswick County attorney's sued the man a couple of months ago, claiming his backyard was a landfill. The attorney's biggest concern is neighbors' water wells could be polluted with toxins from debris that's been sitting in Phillip Rivers's yard for years. Inspectors say the refrigerators, old soda machines and 55-gallon drum barrels contain chemicals that may make rivers neighbors sick. A water test is scheduled for next week. The tests will cost about $4,000. Right now county attorney's are still trying to figure out where in the budget that money will come from. Rivers has been ordered to clean up his yard by the end of the month. The county says it will charge him tens of thousands of dollars if he doesn't get it done by the deadline. If he can't pay that money, the county will put a lien on his home.
