I 've actually wonder why a Flag pole has never been installed on the island before?
During the day, it a navigational tool. It acts as a way point for boaters and a defined marker for visitors to the island.
It's a wind and tide gauge.
At night, the light acts as a beacon.
The Flag pole is also a way to communicate to anyone and everyone in viewing range if there is ever a problem on the island, (for example someone being stranded on this island). There is currently no way to do that.
Lastly, a flag pole flying the American Flag does look good, and is pleasant to look at.
It's not Why Is, but Why Isn't!

Just my thoughts.
