WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) -- Do you have any expired coupons laying around? If you do, then put them to good use by helping out our troops and their families.
A coupon here, a coupon there can quickly add up to some big savings for grocery shoppers. Many times, though, coupons expire before someone can use them, but a program is giving these money savers new life.
Coups for Troops takes expired coupons and sends them overseas to military families, who can still use the coupons in commissaries and exchanges.
"We help by sending them expired coupons," Stephanie Almasy said. "They can use them six months past their expiration date."
Almasy is the organizer for Coups for Troops. She says the program has really taken off since she started in March. Her dining room has been transformed into coupon central.
"It's starting to sit here, because we don't have enough volunteers to help us," she said.
Coups for Troops is doing well on the coupon side of things, but Almasy needs some help clipping, organizing and mailing them off.
"What we're receiving coming in is much greater than the volunteers that we have to stuff or envelops, so that's where this happens," Almasy said of the coupons piling up.
Almasy has teamed up with the New Hanover County Senior Resource Center's Retired and Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP). Volunteers help organize and pack the coupons.
"They pick up the coupons, they take them home and clip them, and then they stuff the envelopes, and they bring them back here to the Senior Center, and then Stephanie and her husband come and pick them up," RSVP's Bunnie Brush said.
The Coups for Troops Facebook page has numerous messages from thankful families, who now have a few extra bucks in their pocket thanks to expired coupons that are no longer any good here on the homefront.
Coups for Troops and the Senior Center will have a meet and greet Tuesday at the Senior Resource Center on S. College Road from 2 to 4 p.m. If you want to find out more on how you can help Coups for Troops you can stop by or check out the Coups for Troops Facebook page. The group is hoping several volunteers will step forward to help package coupons.
