Federal judge blocks state from cutting funding to Planned Parenthood

RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) -- A federal judge has temporarily blocked the
state of North Carolina from cutting funding to the group Planned

In a ruling posted Friday night, Judge James Beaty Jr. said he
was granting a request by one of the state's two Planned Parenthood
affiliates to halt a provision in the state budget halting the
funding until a lawsuit about the move has been decided.

Planned Parenthood of Central North Carolina sued in July to
strike down part of the state budget that bars it from receiving
contracts or grants from the state health agency. The group says
it's being punished for its abortion-rights advocacy, and its
free-speech protections are being violated.

The budget was passed by Republicans, who control the
legislature for the first time in over a century.
