Generators in high demand as Irene approaches

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) -- While it looks like the worst of Hurricane Irene should stay off the coast, we're not in the clear yet. Many in the Cape Fear are ready to batten down the hatches.

Now is the time to prepare, and generators are one of the more popular items flying off the shelves.

Power outages are still a possibility, so people are taking precautions. Half of last night's generator shipment was gone by 11 a.m. Wednesday at the Home Depot off Eastwood Road in Wilmington.

Some say a generator is a necessity.

"It sure is," said Shirley Morre of Brunswick County. "I had one, and it broke, so I have to get another one, because I definitely do not want to be without electricity being I live alone. So it's a worthwhile investment, because they don't go bad. You have to use them."

The Home Depot still has some generators in stock along with water and batteries.
