Progress Energy to make big job cuts in Raleigh

RALEIGH, NC (AP) -- Progress Energy plans to cut as much as half of its work force at its downtown Raleigh headquarters if its planned merger with Charlotte-based Duke Energy is approved.

The utility has notified its workers to expect corporate operations to lose between 700 and 1,000 workers in the company's two high-rise offices.

Progress has said that under the merger plans announced in January it would keep a substantial downtown Raleigh presence. This is the first time company has put a number on that promise.

The corporate merger will create the country's biggest electric utility with 7 million customers in six states. The combined company will be headquartered in Charlotte.

Notices of which jobs will be eliminated or preserved will be made next month.
