No matter which neighborhood you live in, you should always keep your doors locked. It's an unsafe world nowadays, and anyone who leaves doors and windows unlocked (in ANY neighborhood) is giving crooks an open invitation. Some nuts are into home invasions, so even locked doors might not help, but at least you wouldn't be making it easy for them. Don't panic or be fearful; just take precautions.
When you say "there is chatter in the neighborhood", don't you mean gossip? I once heard it said, "Great minds discuss ideas; average minds discuss events; small minds discuss people." Your statement says a lot about your neighborhood. Just remember, whoever gossips TO you will gossip ABOUT you.
