Church honors emergency workers, military as 9/11 anniversary nears

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) -- No matter where you were on September 11, 2001, you will never forget that moment.

As the 10th anniversary approaches, St. Mary Catholic Church in Wilmington took time to pay tribute to the folks who risk their lives to keep us safe. The special recognition mass honored and remembered local law enforcement and members of the military.

New Hanover County Sheriff Ed McMahon said it meant a lot.

"It's very nice when the community, the church wants to have a service for you, wants to pray for you and give emergency personnel some recognition for the hard work we all do every day," McMahon said. "So it's a nice time."

Sheriff McMahon also said that although he can't believe it's been 10 years since that awful day, he feels blessed and lucky to still be here and to be an American.
