Can't imagine the frustration he felt that day - not to be with his wife at such a special time, but at least he got to see his child. This article came off two ways to me. One a parent showing the frustration of what was happening and the sense of not being able to do it, but also a sense of selfishness. There were children born that same day and for a time after that never got to see their dad because they were killed in the attacks. Your son was blessed and should always be taught not that his dad couldn't be there because of the acts of others, but that he has his dad when others don't.
