WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) -- A weekend carjacking landed a suspect in jail and an alleged victim in the hospital. One of the victims says the situation could have been much worse.
Clayton Coston and his wife Michelle were at the Hess gas station off Carolina Road Saturday morning when they began to have car problems. Little did they know the person helping them start their car would eventually steal it.
Clayton Coston says after helping them start their car Jason Batson asked them for a ride and to use their phone. Coston says he was appreciative for the man's help, so they drove down the road. They went to their house down off Morningside Drive, and once the Costons thought they were parting ways, chaos ensued.
"We got to the house, walked to the porch and looked and my wife was bleeding from her elbows," Clayton said. "This dude had run into her and knocked her down and I could hear the tires spinning on my car and he was cutting the corner with the car."
Coston says he called police and the last person Batson had called on his phone. That person said Batson was coming to their house with the intent to harm them.
Sheriff's deputies say they met him at that home near Kerr Avenue, where they arrested Batson for assault on a female, then assault on a law enforcement officer and stealing the car.
Michelle Coston was hospitalized for her injuries.
Clayton Coston says he will no longer trust just anyone along the road.
