WILMINGTON, NC (UNCW Sports Information release ) -- UNCW head swimming and diving coach Dave Allen has announced the addition of national power Tennessee to the women’s swimming and diving schedule for a meet on Sept. 30 at the Seahawk Natatorium. “Tennessee is coming to the coast to train for the upcoming season and had an opening on their schedule,” said Allen, who enters his 35th season with the Seahawks. “We’re excited to swim against a top-15 program and see where we are at that time of the season as we prepare to get the season in full swing.” The Volunteers finished the 2010-11 season ranked ninth in CollegeSwimming.com’s poll and fourth at the SEC Championships.

Additionally, UNCW sophomore Ashley Smith won the annual Wrightsville Beach Pier 2 Pier Swim Race last weekend while junior Mike Smiechowski was the Seahawks top finisher on the men’s side taking fourth with a mark of 33:39. Smith posted a time of 33:34, trimming second-place Kelsey Cummings of El Segundo, Calif. (34:31). Junior Rachel Wilson was UNCW’s other participant in the women’s race, finishing fourth with a time of 37:10.
Sophomore Michael Baric placed 12th in the men’s race, fashioning a time of 37:00.

The race takes place between the two landmark piers on the Wrightsville Beach shoreline. The course stretches from the Johnny Mercer Pier to Crystal Pier, a distance of two miles that includes an open water swim and a short running section.
