WPD says WECT misreported story on "robbery spree"

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) - The Wilmington Police Department is calling out WECT for misreporting a story this morning regarding a "robbery spree."

The station originally reported, "Police in Wilmington are on the lookout for a man believed to have committed at least three robberies on Tuesday morning," and that the Taco Bell and Travel Lodge on Market St. were robbed as well as a home.

A spokesperson for WPD says none of that is true. Police reports from overnight show that a person sitting outside the Taco Bell was robbed of $20. She said she didn't call police because the robber only took $20. Then, she said, she went back to a room at the Travel Lodge with two other people, and the same man who had robbed her a few minutes earlier came to the room. When one of the other people in the room let him in, the victim ran into the bathroom, locked herself in, and hid $800. Then, she reported, she unlocked the bathroom door. The intruder ransacked the bathroom, but didn't find the cash, and he left.

WECT has since deleted the story from its website and reported the "new developments" at Noon without admitting any mistakes.
