Lockdown lifted at schools as search for car chase suspect continues

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) -- Pine Valley Elementary School and Holly Tree Elementary School were under lockdown this afternoon as law enforcement officers searched for a suspect involved in a car chase earlier this afternoon. The lockdowns were lifted in time for normal dismissal for students.

New Hanover County Sheriff's Office spokesman Sgt. Jerry Brewer says it all started with a breaking and entering on Golden Road south of Monkey Junction. When deputies got there they saw a car with two men that fit the description of the suspects. Once the deputy had the tag number of the car, he stopped pursuing and put out an alert on the car.

Brewer says Highway Patrol saw the car and tried to pull it over near the fire station in the Pine Valley area off South College Road. That's when he says the two men jumped out and ran.

Officers caught Melvin Woodrow Boyer near the car. He has been charged with multiple felonies. He is being held in the New Hanover County Detention Facility under a $49,500.00 bond.

Detectives are still searching for the second suspect.
