Governor to visit areas hit by Irene

RALEIGH, NC (AP)-- Gov. Beverly Perdue wants to see how eastern North Carolina is recovering five weeks after Hurricane Irene raked and flooded parts of the region.

Perdue heads out Friday morning to visit three areas hit hard by the storm. She plans to visit storm recovery centers in Bertie and Pamlico counties and travel to the Hatteras Island community of
Waves. Places like Waves are still isolated as North Carolina Highway 12 remains closed south of Nags Head after storm surge breached the road. The Department of Transportation wants the road reopened with
temporary repairs early next month.

More than 28,000 people have registered with the Federal
Emergency Management Agency for assistance from the storm that reached landfall August 27. Grants of $20 million have been approved for homeowners and renters.
