WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY)-- Downtown Wilmington might be starting to bounce back as a handful of businesses will be opening on Front Street. A few of those places are replacing legendary city locations like old Tom's Drugs store and Orton's Pool Room.
"It's good to see that some of the places that were open in the past are now beginning to open up again so you can come down here and have a great time," said Nicholas Kea, a Wilmington resident.
The old Tom's Drugs store is now Village Market. Orton's Pool Room is about to become Orton's Underground and what used to be Rum Runners will soon be Marrakesh Mediterranean restaurant.
The changes along Front Street are not only exciting to the residents of our city but also to the business owners.
"I love downtown, that's why I opened my business here," said Hunter Ford, a downtown business owner."I'm real excited to see some of these old places get recycled and be a little bit more modern."
Orton's Pool Room, which opened in 1888, closed just a few months ago. Orton's Underground looks to bring a lot of the old pool halls characteristics back with a few upgrades. They are hoping to open before Thanksgiving.
"Bringing something back to Wilmington is going to be awesome, and bringing something that's welcomed is cool," said Daniel Dailey, Orton's Underground Manager.
Another building, which used to be Rum Runners, also is a part of the streets alterations. According to its owners, Marrakesh looks to open its doors in about four weeks time. The Mediterranean restaurant specializes in cuisine like hummus and kabobs.
Plus you now have Village Market on the corner of Market and Front. The owner says the convenient store has only had a soft opening, meaning it is not complete. Despite that, the restoration to what used to be Tom's Drugs store is already becoming a hit.
