WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) -- Hundreds of people got a little exercise on Saturday morning, all in the name of a good cause. Folks who participated in the 2011 Cape Fear Heart Walk say the event on UNCW’s campus was a great success. Participants were excited about the walk not just to raise money for The American Heart Association but also to raise awareness. They say it’s important to get up and get out and exercise.

"Until something happens, people don't realize how many people die across the country every day due to the illness,” said heart attack survivor Travis Robinson. “It’s just a matter of getting out and educating people and realizing that it does take a lot of people's lives every year. And we've got to change our habits. We gotta get out of sitting in the recliner and at least do something. Walk, if nothing else."

"Well it's good to exercise because it's healthy,” said 6-year-old heart disease survivor Ella Grae. “It pumps blood are through the body so we can get enough oxygen to breathe and that's why it's good to exercise."

The walk raised over $100,000 for The American Heart Association.
