Students get hands-on history lesson at Brunswick Town

READ MORE:

BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC (WWAY) -- Fourth graders in Brunswick County are seeing the world through the eyes of settlers during Heritage Days at Brunswick Town.

From becoming a blacksmith to making their own candles, the students who visited the historic site today were amazed at the history in their own backyard.

Jim McKee oversees the educational programs at Brunswick Town. He says this is a chance to bring to life what students are already learning in the classroom.

"History is beginning to be an overlooked subject in schools, and it's important for not just the children, but for all Americans to understand where they've been before they know where they're going to go," McKee said.

Students from around Brunswick County will get their hands-on lessons all week long.

The public can take part in Colonial Heritage Day Saturday at target="new">Brunswick Town/Fort Anderson State Historic Site.
