Residents, authorities meet to stop Creekwood violence

READ MORE: Residents, authorities meet to stop Creekwood violence
WILMINGTON -- Recent violence in the Creekwood community is keeping City leaders motivated to get the area cleaned up. Members of the police department, Creekwood tenants and the gang task force met Wednesday. The organizer of the event says one of the main topics of Wednesday's meeting is the violence in the area. In May a 17-year-old was shot and killed in the neighborhood. The organizer also says more gang symbols have been showing up in the area, which is why the gang task force will be at the meeting. The group will be discussing ways to keep kids and teens out of gangs and into community activities. Wilmington Mayor Bill Saffo said, "I had the opportunity to talk to the mother of the young man who was killed on princess place drive several weeks ago. And she had indicated to me that her son had been approached by a gang and had been hanging around some of these gang members. He tried to break away from that particular gang ... And they were trying to bring him back in." Also being discussed at the meeting tonight, a new lease for tenants in the community from the Wilmington housing authority, that makes residents responsible for their guests. District Attorney Ben David is also said to be attending. Mayor Saffo says if any residents have concerns in that area they can call his office or get in touch with someone at the Wilmington Police Department.
