Coast Guard warns of shallow water in NC inlet

WILMINGTON, NC (AP) -- The Coast Guard is warning boaters of shallow water in an inlet southwest of Wilmington.

The Coast Guard says it has removed navigation buoys at Lockwoods Folly Inlet between Holden Beach and Oak Island because of shallow water. The agency says Hurricane Irene complicated the shallow water problem.

Channel depths are less than three feet in many parts of the waterway, below standards for safe navigation.

The Coast Guard is advising boaters on marine radio to find alternative channels to reach the Atlantic Ocean.

The navigational buoys will be returned when water levels improve.
