NC House leader pressing for eugenics payments

READ MORE:

RALEIGH, NC (AP) -- A top leader at the North Carolina General Assembly wants to form a committee to help figure out how to pay victims of a state program that forced thousands of people to undergo sterilizations.

A spokesman for Speaker Thom Tillis confirmed Friday the Mecklenburg County Republican wants a special legislative panel created so legislation can be considered during the work session that begins next May.

Tillis told The Charlotte Observer a lot of work would have to be done before then for the compensation issue to be considered. A state task force already is looking at the issue.

The state Eugenics Board authorized sterilizing about 7,600 North Carolinians deemed unfit to have children between 1929 and
1974.

Tillis spokesman Jordan Shaw said the committee's makeup has not been settled.
