As far as working for the city and not receiving a raise in three years, try taking a pay cut.
I work for a private company and we have had a number of rounds of layoffs. I am fortunate to still be employeed with the company and have taken on more responsibility, since we have almost half the number of employees that we had 3 years ago.
18 months ago, in leui of more layoffs, employees were asked to take a paycut indefinately. Me and all of my co-workers were happy to do it.
Yes, our benefits have been cut as well. Our healthcare costs have increased while our deductibles have increased and our coverage has decreased.
We have not seen any 401K matching since 2008 and won't for a while. We have not received a Christmas bonus in 3 years, and definately won't this year either.
Still, at the end of the day, I am thrilled to still be working and so are my co-workers. My company is doing the best it can. By keeping the remaining employees on the payroll, I (along with my fellow employees) am continuing to pay taxes, which in turn, allows you and your fellow coworkers to keep your jobs.
Please, give it a rest. Read the news, everyone has cut back, the government should be no exception.
