WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) -- As we continue to honor our veterans, we are reminded that freedom comes with a price.

Army Captain Ivan Castro lost his sight in Iraq in 2006 because of an explosive. He’s served for more than 20 years and traveled all over world. Now, he works in recruiting at Fort Bragg and has not let his life-altering accident slow him down.

Castro said instead of dwelling on what he doesn't have, he's thankful for what he does have. He knows the importance of physical fitness and is raising money with the help of Step Up for Soldiers to build a gym for disabled service men and women in his own backyard.

"At the end of the day, I'm still an officer, still a father, still a husband,” Castro said. “You just can't quit. You have to continue on. It's easy to quit, but quitting is not in our language. We don't quit in time of war, and we don't quit back here. So there are still things that need to happen."

In the past four years, Castro has completed 21 marathons, 19 half-marathons, five Army 10-milers, three triathlons, two 15-mile ultra-marathons and a 400-mile bike ride.

He wants to inspire wounded service men and women like himself to live life beyond their injuries.
