Hoop star gives away turkeys in hometown

SHALLOTTE, NC (WWAY) -- A former West Brunswick High hoops hero is giving back to his community from afar.

Cedric Simmons was a basketball star at West Brunswick High, NC State and in the NBA. He now plays for a team overseas in Spain, but is reaching out locally this holiday season by giving away 100 turkeys to needy families Saturday.

People lined up early for the free birds and said they are so thankful for Simmons' giving heart this Thanksgiving. Although Cedric couldn't be there to pass out the turkeys, his family and fiancée helped out.

"He absolutely loves his hometown and just wants to do whatever he can to try and support and help families, especially in this time of difficulties that everyone seems to be having,” Simmons’ fiancée Sabrina Acevedo said. “It just seemed really fitting to try and give back in this way."

"It makes it tremendously better, because without it, we wouldn't have a turkey, we wouldn't have food,” Tamara Toman said as she waited in line for a turkey. “Around the holidays, you center around food a lot, and to not be able to, that just brings you down."

All 100 turkeys were given out within about 30 minutes.
