WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) -- Port City Java is organizing a Make a Marine's Thanksgiving drive. They're looking for 27 families to host two Marines each from Camp Lejeune Thanksgiving Day from 11:30 a.m. until 5 p.m. You can feed them lunch, watch some football, or do whatever your family does to celebrate the holiday.
"To do something for the folks that put their lives on the line for our country, for our people... this is such a small way to say thank you," said Port City Java CEO Steve Schnitzler.
Schnitzler also says Thanksgiving is the ultimate family holiday. He wants to give North Carolina based Marines who wish it, a great turkey day experience.
"What we're trying to do is provide some home cooked meals and a little time off the base for Marines that are far away from home and may not have family in the area," said Schnitzler.
The original idea was to go up to Camp Lejeune, get the Marines and bring them back for the meal. To get a few more service members into the mix, Port City Java will hire a charter bus. For families who host them, the only outside cost will be what is spent on food.
"Thanksgiving is about family time and since these folks are far away from their families hopefully we can give them a little bit of that surrogate family experience while they are serving," added Schnitzler.
The eventual goal of the event is to give every Marine that wants a home for Thanksgiving that option.
