Brunswick deputies warn of mail scams

BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC (WWAY) -- If you have been targeted by foreign scam artists in the last few years, you are not alone. The Brunswick County Sheriff's Office says marketing fraud is all too common.

Fraud investigator Ed Carter says in the last two years Brunswick County has seen more than $500,000 in losses from scams. Victims have reported more than 20 cases.

He says the scams generally target the elderly and typically claim the recipient has won something or ask for help cashing a check.

"In the last six to eight months we have gotten a lot of telephone calls and a lot of e-mails through our web server about folks receiving cold calls saying, 'You have won x number of dollars and a vehicle," or 'x number of dollars and a trip,' and these folks have really fallen victim to this."

Carter advises victims of the scams to come forward and report it. He says many times people feel ashamed and fail to notify law enforcement.
