FAYETTEVILLE, NC (AP) -- Fayetteville police say a violent confrontation that left three people dead and two others wounded did not happen during a break-in.
A statement from police Monday said the suspect in the killings knew at least one of the victims, and was familiar with the home.
Shawn Lee Legrand, 44, will face three charges of first-degree murder when he's released from a local hospital. He's being treated for wounds suffered when two police officers shot him Saturday after responding to a 911 call.
Police initially thought the attack started as a break-in, but they now say Legrand went to the home to confront someone and then shot or stabbed the others.
State Correction Department records show Legrand spent 23 years in prison for violent crimes before his release in July.
