Local stores cash in on Cyber Monday with online deals

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) -- The holiday shopping frenzy continued today, but this time you didn't have to worry about the crowds. Online shopping is another way for retailers to cash in by offering one day only deals.

It's known as Cyber Monday. Not to be outdone, local stores got in on the action.

It's a busy Monday at Edge of Urge, but not all the customers are here in person. This Wilmington Boutique is participating in Cyber Monday by offering online deals to shoppers near and far.

"In order to compete now we've got to be online, so throwing out this coupon, which is comparable to a lot of the bigger stores, lot of stores have great coupons out there, and ours is a bit better than theirs," Edge of Urge's Michael Ussery said. "So it's just kinda to take a small town wilmington store and put them in front of new customers with a great deal."

Roughly 5,000 of their customers received an e-mail about the sale, and since it started at midnight Monday, orders have been pouring in. Owner Jessie Williams started the small company nine and a half years ago.

"I am incredibly grateful, and it's really exciting to have grown this much over the years and to be finding new customers all over the world and locally," Williams said.

And new customers are taking advantage of the sale. A computer keeps up with the online orders. The receipts are printed. Then a clerk fills the orders. Late Monday morning a table was filled with merchandise people ordered online just waiting to be wrapped and shipped.

So far, shoppers from Montana, Maryland and Australia spent some cash here on Cyber Monday. It's cash that will stay local helping our economy grow, while at the same time growing a customer base for a local shop.

"It's pretty vital for us to do, because we're getting people in on a sale, and they're buying great items at a huge discount and hopefully a large percentage of them will turn into return customers and we'll find a completely new fanbase for Edge of Urge," Ussery said.

Other local shops, like Hallelu, offered deals such as free shipping to online customers.
