NORMAL,IL (UNCW news release) -- The UNCW men’s basketball team grew up big time on a rainy Saturday night in central Illinois and it couldn’t have come at a better time.

The Seahawks, who had lost their first five games of the 2011-12 season, jumped on host Illinois State early and never trailed in a 63-54 verdict over the Redbirds in a non-conference matchup between teams from the Colonial Athletic Association and Missouri Valley Conference.

UNCW moved to 1-5 on the year by winning the second leg of a four-game road swing that continues Tuesday at Liberty. ISU dropped to 5-3 and had its four-game winning streak at Redbird Arena halted.
“I’m so happy for these kids,” Peterson said. “We came out, delivered a punch and this time we finished it. We executed our game plan. Now we have to build off of this.”

Freshman guard Adam Smith continued his hot start for the Seahawks, leading the club with a game-high 19 points for his sixth consecutive double-figure game to open his collegiate career. Junior forward Keith Rendleman notched his second double-double of the season and the eighth of his three-year career with 13 points and 14 rebounds. Senior guard Trevor Deloach added 13 critical points off the bench for the Seahawks.
Junior forward Jackie Carmichael matched Rendleman’s double-double with one of his own on 15 points and 13 boards. After forging out to a 32-23 advantage at halftime, the Seahawks turned back three surges by the Redbirds in the second half to stun Tim Jankovich’s club before 5,157 Redbird faithful.
ISU came out firing after the break and narrowed the deficit to one point, 35-34, on a conventional three-point play by Anthony Cousin with 14:34 remaining. But the Seahawks, behind reserve forward Nate Anderson, responded and pushed the lead back to 11 points. Anderson drained back-to-back triples and a Deloach jumper along the right baseline increased the margin back to 49-38.

UNCW still led, 54-42, with just over six minutes left to play, but the Redbirds made one final charge, scoring 10 unanswered points to get within, 54-52. The Seahawks went nearly six minutes without a basket and Nic Moore’s layup at 1:46 closed the gap to two points.
Deloach hit a clutch layup with 58 ticks left to get the score back to 56-52 and UNCW went 7-for-8 at the free throw line, cashing in on both ends of three consecutive bonus situations, to nail down the win.
The Seahawks jumped out to a 32-23 lead at halftime behind the tandem of Smith and Rendleman. Smith scored 12 points in the opening period and Rendleman had 10 for UNCW, which shot 48 percent from the floor.
While ISU was ice-cold from the floor, making just three of its first 12 field goal attempts, UNCW took command early. After Moore had sliced UNCW’s lead to 11-9 with a layup through the middle of the paint at 9:29, the Seahawks used a 7-0 mini-run to push the margin to 18-9. Rendleman’s tip-in with 8:16 left in the period gave UNCW a nine-point cushion.

Back-to-back monster dunks by Carmichael closed the gap to 20-19 with just over five minutes left before the Seahawks surged in the last quarter of the period. UNCW closed out the half with a 12-4 run, capped by Tanner Milson’s triple with 32 seconds remaining that extended the lead to 10 points, and went into the locker room with a nine-point advantage.
The Seahawks continue their road journey on Tuesday with a 7 p.m. matchup against Big South Conference foe Liberty at the Vines Center in Lynchburg, Va. The Redbirds travel to Morehead State on Saturday to battle the Eagles at 6 p.m.
