NC man crashes into DWI checkpoint, charge pending

NEWTON, NC (AP) -- A North Carolina motorist could face charges once police decide why he crashed into their DWI checkpoint.

The Hickory Daily Record reported the man's car plowed into the rear of a parked mobile testing lab built into a bus. The RV-sized lab had a magistrate, several officers and two suspects caught by the DWI checkpoint inside when it was hit by a car driven by 21-year-old Douglas Southard of Hickory.

Newton Police Maj. Kevin Yarborough says Southard was drifting in and out of consciousness at the scene and was taken by ambulance to Catawba Valley Medical Center.

Yarborough said the crash occurred shortly before 3 a.m. Sunday as officers from four local law enforcement agencies were closing down their DWI checkpoint along U.S. Highway 321 Business.
