DURHAM, N.C. (AP) -- An independent probe of how Durham police handled the Duke lacrosse rape case has been stopped. The city's insurance provider has warned that results of the review could provide material for civil lawsuits. The future of the review committee will be decided after the exonerated players' lawyers meet with the city counsel next week. Critics have accused police of bungling the investigation through errors of omission and commission. All three lacrosse players were eventually declared innocent by state prosecutors who took over the case. Former Durham prosecutor Mike Nifong has since been disbarred and resigned.
