Dorothy B. Johnson Elementary to close

READ MORE: Dorothy B. Johnson Elementary to close
NEW HANOVER COUNTY -- The school year has just begun and already, students at one New Hanover County school are having to think about where they'll go next year. Students at Dorothy B. Johnson Elementary in Wilmington won't be going there next year. Instead, that building will be used by kids currently attending Snipes Elementary. The decision was made this week. Parents of students at Johnson Elementary haven't even been notified. Johnson -a year round school- is closing because snipes elementary is undergoing a major renovation next year and needs to be unoccupied for a officials decided to send the students from snipes over to Johnson. The problem now is figuring out where the students from Johnson will go to school next year. Parent Melissa Cook said, "I'm very disappointed. I have a little boy who just started kindergarten here and he has wonderful teachers and the staff is great and now he's going to have to change schools to go somewhere next year." Johnson's principal says the school was chosen as snipes replacement because Johnson has the lowest enrollment rate in the county. Right now, the school is only at one third of its capacity... Six out of its 15 classrooms are not even being used. The students at Johnson have three options of where to can go next year. The traditional school they are assigned to, try and enroll at Snipes, or go to Eaton or Codington – the only other year round schools in the county. There are problems with each of those options.
