Duke 107 - UNCW 45

DURHAM,NC (UNCW Sports Release ) -- No. 9 Duke notched the most points in any single game for an UNCW opponent on its way to overpowering the Seahawks, 107-45, in collegiate women’s basketball action Tuesday night in Cameron Indoor Stadium.

The Seahawks saw their three-game winning streak come to an end and fell to 5-5 on the season. The Blue Devils rose to 8-2 for the year.

UNCW sophomore Abria Trice led the way in the loss with 12 points. Junior Tawanna Lee was the only other Seahawk in double figures with 11.

Duke junior Allison Vernerey came off the bench to lead the Blue Devils with a career high 22 points. Sophomore Chelsea Gray added a double-double with 14 points and 10 assists. Sophomore Trisha Liston, freshman Elizabeth Williams and sophomore Chloe Wells tallied 18, 16 and 11 points, respectively.

Duke came out of the gate quickly, winning the tip and getting a layup from freshman Elizabeth Williams only six seconds into the contest to hand the Blue Devils a 2-0 lead.

The fast start continued as Duke forced seven UNCW turnovers in the first seven minutes, helping the Blue Devils jump out to a 14-1 advantage, a run capped by a layup from sophomore Chelsea Gray with 14:17 remaining in the stanza.

The Seahawks responded with a 7-0 streak of their own to draw within six, 14-8, after two free throws from sophomore Alisha Andrews at the 12:28 mark. But Duke outscored UNCW 38-12 during the rest of the frame to lead 55-22 at the break.

The 55 first-half points were the most UNCW has allowed in a single half this season, and the most since March 5, 2000 when the Seahawks allowed 58 to Richmond.

The Blue Devils coasted through the second half, never allowing UNCW to get within 27 points, and eventually building their advantage to 62 points at the game’s end.

UNCW returns to Wilmington after the holiday break to take on Xavier on Dec. 29 at 7:00 p.m. Duke takes a brief hiatus as well before it travels to Temple Dec. 30 to take on the Owls.
