WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) -- It's easy to get wrapped up in the presents, lights, ribbons and bows and forget the true reason for the season.
Gibson Avenue Baptist Church has been putting on a live nativity since the early 1990's. Church members say it's their way of putting Christ back into Christmas.
Costumes are handmade by volunteers, and members give their time to reenact the first Christmas scene.
"The community and the world together are suffering and hurting with many different challenges of life,” Pastor of Gibson Avenue Baptist Merrell McKoy said. “I believe, apart from the trees and apart from the presents, all that's good, but I think this really gives a deep, heartfelt hope that there is something better, and there's something to search for, and there's something that all can find."
McKoy said this year's mild temperatures and clear skies are a blessing, but the nativity is up and running no matter the weather.
