Complaints bring halt to NC group's turkey shoots

READ MORE:

COINJOCK, NC (AP) -- The North Carolina American Legion is looking into a Currituck County chapter's regular turkey shoots after complaints by neighbors brought the fundraising activity to a halt.

The Daily Advance of Elizabeth City reports that the legion's Coinjock post has stopped the 30-year tradition. Its commander, John Jasinski, was cited by the Currituck County Sheriff's Office for unlawful discharge of a firearm this month.

The sheriff's office says neighbors complained about the noise from a turkey shoot held by a motorcycle club on the post's property earlier this month.

The Coinjock post normally holds turkey shoots every Saturday from October to April. But the motorcycle club shoot was on Sunday, which helped prompt the complaints.

Jasinski says he believes the event is exempt from the regulation banning Sunday shoots.
