Fire damages Pender Co. business

READ MORE: Fire damages Pender Co. business

PENDER COUNTY, NC (WWAY) -- A fire at a Pender County factory this morning left employees cleaning up the damage.

Employees at the Chloride Systems plant in Burgaw got quite a surprise friday morning when they discovered a fire in the production room.

"I got a call about 6:40 this morning that said one of our employees had found a fire in the production area and had tried to put it out with a fire extinguisher," employee Donna Murphrey said.

Coworker Greg Lenier said, "It started in one of our inventory racks and just worked its way up. He said it just grew crazy, so he just got out of there."

Both Burgaw and Rocky Point Fire Departments responded to the light fixture manufacturing plant. They got help from within the building.

"By the time I got here, the fire was already out. The sprinkler system had put it out. It was contained to a small area thank goodness," Murphrey said.

With the fire out, employees say it will take a few days to get things cleaned up.

"Of course we have the water from the fire departments that we have to clean up and then smoke damage," Lenier said. "Smoke damage will be our worst within the office and the production floor also."

Though the fire did keep employees from working Friday, it won't keep them off the job for long.

"We might get the rest of the day off, but we'll have to be back here in the morning," Lenier said.

Investigators are still trying to figure out what started the fire.
